Raising Heritage Sheep to Meet Niche Markets

Review

Laurie Maus, Mentor for our Chapter, presented an interesting and educational presentation on raising Heritage sheep for niche markets, based on her extensive experience as a breeder.

Laurie’s professional presentation skills and her well developed power point presentation contributed to an excellent workshop beneficial to both the beginner shepherd as well as the experienced breeders.

From the identification of potential markets, the selection and sourcing of breeding animals, developing unique products and eventually evaluating your success, were just some of the points covered which made everyone aware of the complexities of setting up an operation to develop a niche market.  As usual, Laurie is always available to answer questions and assist in any way as new breeders set up their breeding program.

Following the formal presentation, Laurie entertained questions from the audience while everyone enjoyed treats and coffee.

A very interesting visit to Laurie and Bob’s farm, Hawk Hill, provided more information for the attendees and capped off the afternoon.

Once again our Chapter thanks the Dunvegan Recreation Association for the use of their beautiful and comfortable hall.
