Loading the horse power for the treadmill.

Published on Mar 12, 2014 Over the winter  Ken Laing, Rare Breeds Canada member modified a sea container by adding a power shaft that can be run by an Athens horse powered treadmill. Now he can use that shaft and a simple clutch to send the power provided by horses (via their treadmill) to run a grain mill and make flour.

This video gives a quick look at how the whole process works.

In the photos Martha Laing shows the finished product of sour dough bread.

Ken Laing describing how the flour mill works. The rod that Ken's hand is near powers the pulley system for the mill and the table that moves to screen the bran from the flour. The two horses on the treadmill are on the other side of the wall behind Ken.

Half way through the baking time the lid is removed from the cast iron dutch oven.

Ken grows the Hard Red Winter Wheat on their Orchard Hill Farm near Sparta, ON. The lower photo shows the screen that removes the course bran from the flour. The screen is mechanically moved back and forth to create the motion that moves the flour through the mesh. It is very clever the way the whole system runs off the power of the two horses on the treadmill.
